Augie Pabst: Behind the Wheel

We were fortunate to have our color image of Augie at Riverside 1960 chosen for the dust cover. Carroll Shelby is in the Maserati Birdcage Typo 61 following. Augie says that this drive was the best of his career and most satisfying.

Another coup was having black and white image (shown at bottom) of Augie used as the first picture in the book, cover image not withstanding. This is at Laguna Seca October 20, 1963 with Augie sitting in the Team Mecom Cooper Monaco T61 that team mate Roger Penske drove in the main event. Augie was always asked to warm Penske's seat before a race, I guess.

Augie Pabst III and Allen R. KuhnI will always have a special remembrance of this shot. I meeting Augie III, Augie's son, at the Vintage Races held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin in 2010. I showed him some pictures of his dad racing in California, including a 20" x 30" print of the color shot on the dust cover.

Father Augie was not there at that time, but "III" gave his Dad my cell number. As luck would have it Augie called me while we were in an auditorium at the Miller Brewing Co for a tour. The ushers got a hoot out of it when I said I had to leave take a call from Pabst. He invited us to the Pabst Farm in, get ready for this, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (that's what they call it) where he took us across Lake Oconomowoc on his pontoon boat for a great lunch at his club.

We are standing in Augie's garage next to his REAL Scarab, and his retirement fund. Also special is that the picture was taken by Carole, my wonderful wife and partner in our Vintage Sports Car adventures. Also many thanks to equally wonderful daughter / web designer, Lisa, for keeping our web site perking along these many years. (Thanks, Dad)

Being a visual guy for me to actually read a book, besides the captions, is a feat. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first third that I have read so far. Bob Birmingham’s words and research opened my eyes to the fact that Augie is a great driver and not just a playboy acting like a driver. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read with many behind the seen descriptions. Well done.

Read a review of the book here.
